The best cure for clearing your mind is a walk along the beach. You can do this here without bumping into a soul because the beach is so vast. If you’d like to aim for something, make your way to De Vrijheit beach pavilion, far from civilisation.
The beach at Heemskerk is anything but touristy, which is not surprising as it’s in the middle of a nature reserve and can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. It’s a 3km walk or ride from the car park at the entrance to the North Holland Dune Reserve. Once on the beach, if you fancy a coffee, just carry on walking two more kilometres to De Vrijheit beach pavilion.
Hey, did you know?
Close to the beach pavilion lies the wreck of ‘De Vrijheit’. This freighter ran aground on the sand bank during a storm in 1903. It broke in two and lost its cargo. You can still see the boiler room sticking out above the waves.
